UK Pedalcar organisers announce 2004 race dates...

The UK also hosts the inaugural European pedalcar championships this year. If you want see some hot pedalcar racing action - or to join in - read on...

****

The British Federation of Pedal Car Racing (BFPCR) held their AGM on October 12th and can now therefore confirm next
year's calendar:

  • ROUND 1: Saturday April 17th: South Berkshire 6-hour race.

  • ROUND 2: Saturday June 5th: Leicester 1 + 2 + 3 hrs.

  • ROUND 3: Sunday June 6th: Leicester 6-hour race.

  • (ROUNDS 2 AND 3 WILL MAKE UP THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP)

  • ROUND 4: Sat/Sun June 26th/27th : Margam 24-hour race.

  • NON-BPCC: Sunday 11th July: Ringwood 2-hour race.

  • ROUND 5: Saturday August 29th: Preston. 3 x 80 mins.(late start)

  • ROUND 6: Sunday August 30th: Preston. 100-mile race.(early finish)

  • ROUND 7: Saturday 18th September: Curborough 5 x 1 hr. sprints.

A few changes from 2003 have been made due to our hosting of the European Championships (which double as rounds 2 and 3) and the movement of the 24 hour race another week later to miss the dreaded A-levels and GCSEs which have hampered the younger teams finding drivers for this event in the past.

7 races over 5 weekends will total around or about 56 hours of racing so the endurance element, which is such an important part of pedal car racing, has been maintained whilst the overall demands on the time for the teams has been slightly reduced along with some of the travelling costs.

We hope that the calendar is a little more "user friendly" than perhaps it was this year.

The Ringwood race in July is an added bonus. This extremely good event is not BFPCR run but details are available through www.pedalcars.info.

We are also hopeful of hiring a circuit during March for an "open test session" to shake out the gremlins in the new machinery before the season proper starts in April. All details will, of course, be on the website.

2003 saw another step forwards in speed and competitiveness with most races being hotly contested in the spirit of friendliness and good sportsmanship that is expected of pedal car (and all HPV) drivers. We hope this will continue into 2004 and look forward to seeing whether next years crop of new teams can push the envelope even further than this years did.

  • Second hand cars can be picked up relatively cheaply.

Obviously you pays your money and takes your choice.

Any for sale are advertised on pedalcars dot info

  • Anyone fancy organising teams for Octos racing at the york Rally?

  • From: jes (@pedalcars.info) on 04 November 2003
  • Unfortunately it clashes with the Swansea 24 hour race. Otherwise, if I knew what Octos racing was, then it sounds like a good idea.

  • For those who've never met one - The Octos, aka Conference Bike. Eight seats on the original, seven on the more recent model. Imagine an octopus on wheels. Wows the public, and a very good way to take an overexcited group of kids away from crunching gears and skidding on a Try Out track and make them slightly travel sick. If ordinary bike racing was greyhounds, and pedalcars were racehorses, Conference bike racing would be elephants. Or Hippopotami. See story from March about the one that got stolen for a picture...

  • I image a goodly number of pedal car teams would be well up for a conference bike race, but for the calendar clash. Having pilotted one (and been pilotted on one) of the originals at York in 2000, my only demand would be, "I'm driving"!

Thanks for that piccie. Jase had already sent it me and once work problems are resolved I'll bung it up on Byke Kultuur, erm, 19, is it?

I get an hour midday, 5 days a week, at work, for which I'm not paid but with FREE internet access when it works, hence BKN at all, ever.

PS that Sofa-Cykel will not be appearing in BKN 'cos motorised versions have off and on appeared in the media for years. These guys are way, way too late to be called inovators.
