Crossing Canada by couch

We don't normally cover tour reports but this one's a bit special...

Couch bike pic

Take a look at

http://www.bikeforest.com/cb/index.html

where you'll find a fascinating tale of how a couple of recumbent riders took 'sofa-bike' literally... and it's a well-written account of their encounters with the law, riding mishaps and good-natured endeavour.

Thanks to Wayne Estes for mentioning this on the HPV Mailing list.

  • The video is very funny ;-)

More seriously, that site also has some excellent Java-based wheelbuilding and bike design tools, including gadgets for tandems and SWB recumbents.

  • I expect to read an interview in next BKN issue. Go for it Mr Seamus.

  • Having already built a pedal powered Scalextric inspired by the Leicester two-some, I think this is the next BIG construction challenge. Let's all race our own versions at the next and final CycleFest 2004 !!!!!

  • Oh yes, I can just imagine my non-cyclist housemate's expression when he asks where the sofa has gone and we say 'We're converting it to race at Cyclefest'. I suppose a reclining sofa would give an even more recumbent ride. Would you choose leather or draylon? Flowery cushions? And there are those holders you can get to put over the arm for the remote control, which would hold Powerbars and bananas... Stop me, I'm liking this idea too much...

  • I just caught the end of a feature on design classics on BBC Radio 4's You and Yours programme in which Creative Director of 'Habitat', Tom Dixon, nominated 'the bicycle' as his one and only desert island design classic. So maybe we should plump for Habitat sofas to convert for racing. Listeners are also invited to vote for their own design classic on the website:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/youandyours/
so let's see if we can the bike up where it belongs...

  • Any potential teams of couch-constructors out there? If you'd like some sponsorship for Jason's cyclefest challenge, get in touch. Might be able to sort something out.

  • I don't see a big market for this amonst local authorities.

  • Tush! Lots of our local authority work is about encouraging couch potatos to take up more active lifestyles. We have two big clients gagging for it!
