December news roundup

A collection of stories which have been gathered in my in-tray during the Issue 12 deadline and mailing frenzy: Belleville Rendezvous on TV (in the UK) as a Christmas treat, Eco-Trip spaces still available, pedicabs in Japan, pedalcar news, a Cycling Ceilidh in Greenwich, rickshaws connect rural India, a new HPV Hour record, Cycle Heritage Leicester and more...

- Cycling films supremo Seamus King informs me:
This popular, recently released, animated, cycling film (Belleville Rendezvous) will be broadcast by the BBC over Christmas...
- December 25th on BBC 2 at 7.00pm.
- December 28th on BBC4 at 11.40pm.

- Eco-trip 2004 organiser Ken Davison writes to say that there are still a few places left on this ecological transport awareness ride through Northumberland (25-31 July), thanks to some cancellations. See www.ecotrip.info for all the details.

- Keith Hales sent this link to a story about a pedicab operation in Japan:
http://www.asahi.com/english/lifestyle/TKY200311240074.html.

- Pedalcar racing press person Jeremy Featherstone notes that the latest edition of their newsletter is now out, and can be downloaded as a PDF from: http://www.pedalcars.info/news/pcn/index.asp

- Teri Griffith informs me:
"Greenwich Cyclists are having their (second) annual Ceilidh (Celtic Country Dancing) in West Greenwich House, 141 Greenwich High Road, London SE10 8JA (Tel: 020 8333 0086) on Saturday 13th December at 8pm. See http://www.greenwichcyclists.org.uk/ceilidh.pdf.

- Bill Phelps forwarded this link to a BBC story about telephone-toting pedicabs in India:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3256516.stm

- A (still to be confirmed/ratified) new HPV Hour record was set by Sam Whittingham and the Varna team in mid-November: a full writeup is at
http://www.recumbents.com/mars/pages/lib/libtexas.html
The new record is 52.2 mph. A report by Sam can be found here. The new record is just a shade faster than the previous benchmark of 51.33 miles (82.6km) set by Lars Teutenberg in the German Whitehawk in mid-2002.

- Roger Lovell of Cyclemagic announces the formation of Cycle Heritage Leicester, "to research and record the rich and varied cycling history of Leicester". He says "Working with schools and community groups the two year project will record a wide variety of memories from current and former cyclists, and also research the history of the city’s many early cycling clubs, manufactures and well known figures. The project will also celebrate cycling history with events and exhibitions. In conjunction with Leicester Museum Service a web based archive of photographs and historic documents will be created. The project has the support of Leicester Museum Service, Leicester City Council, Leicester University, Sustrans and numerous local cycling and community groups. A cycle history roadshow will also be available from Spring 2004." email Roger for more details.

- And just a note that the splendid Velorution site has featured many good links and stories recently - together with ascerbic commentary on many of them! Take a look...

  • Never mind, you'll be history one day and then I can research (make up) your life story and that of BKN.

  • I suspect it'll be much more interesting than the reality.

After showing off the piccie of me in Velovision (yes, it arrived yesterday) to some colleagues, it's been suggested that for the benefit of all humanity all photographs of me should be destroyed.

Someone also reckoned what I do to bikes is cruel!

  • If you miss Belleville Rendezvous over Christmas, there's a chance to see it at next years Cycling Films Festival in Leicester.
