New velomobile hits the streets

The 'Leiba' from Germany is a curvaceous new fully-enclosed machine - and it's not expensive. Also, a 57-velomobile gathering in the Netherlands and ideas for fold-it-yourself fairings...

The Leiba velomobile is the product of Eduard Ganske and Wasili Gess, originally from Kirghizstan but who have been living in Germany since 1987. They've been working on it since 2000 and have, they say, built and tested four vehicles. The Leiba website is only in German at present. Some translations, including technical portions, have been posted to the velomobile mailing list by Mary Arneson: see for example here, and here.

According to the site, with an 8-speed Sturmey-Archer hub (with drum brake) it will cost 4200 Euros, and with a Rohloff 14-speed hub gear (and disk brake) it'll cost 4900 Euros.

We'll try and get more info and better pics for next issue.

Meanwhile the Netherlands confirms itself as the capital of velomobilia with the 'Olliebollentocht' - a ride to eat the traditional 'Olliebollen' pastries. This year an amazing 57 velomobiles gathered for the occasion, and a full writeup of the event, with links to many, many pictures, can be found at:

Finally, velomobile mailing list contributor Brecht Vandeputte described some work he's been doing with 'stealth fighter' fairing design to enclose his TriSled trike - building up a smooth shape from flat panels. This sort of design should be very easy and cheap to construct from 'Coroplast' or lightweight corrugated plastic commonly used for posters and the like. Enjoy the pictures on his site, even though the text is only in Dutch. You can read his description on the mailing list in English here and here.

  • Corroplast, or as it is called in german "Stegplatte", is a very usefull material. Carradice of Nelson England uses it to stiffen panniers.
I have also used it in the bag I made for my Moulton.
Another alternative would be useing "artists board"(Paper reanforced Styrofoam).
This has been tried and proven as building material for the Moulton Liner!

  • No use to you Jason. Only good girls and boys get any toys.

  • Even us recalcitrant pedal car racers think that 35kg is quite a lot of weight to be carrying around though. Even with a full fairing.

Is there a race version d'you think?
