New edition of 'The Recumbent Bicycle' published...
A new English-language edition of Gunnar Fehlau's book is out - with updated content and photos.

We reviewed the first edition way back in Velo Vision Issue 1 in March 2001. Two years on the American publisher, Jeff Potter of Out Your Backdoor Press, announces the new edition:
*****
The long-awaited new edition of "The Recumbent Bicycle" by Gunnar Fehlau, is ready to ship!
This is the only complete book about recumbent bicycles.
It does a great job of answering (almost) any question or point of interest about these bikes - from general to history to sports, touring and city use. It presents solid background and tech info that pleases the experts as well.
It doesn't single out brands for comparison - instead it analyzes the qualities of all the various features and parameters found on recumbents. It offers pros and cons of each option and lets the reader be the judge regarding their needs.
This 2nd English edition is updated with dozens of new photos and hundreds of new manufacturer listings and current news and readability improvement (the final traces of "Deutsch" in the translation should be now ironed out!).
It features a hot new cover design and is produced with the best in offset printing. (See a cover scan and more at www.outyourbackdoor.com)
Thousands of copies of the first edition were sold so far by word of mouth, with continuous rave reviews. But this is now the first concentrated campaign to really get the word out about recumbents nationwide via this book. Bikeshops, bookstores and libraries will all now be able to show people the full story of this amazing breed of bike. This book will help keep the recent wave of interest in these bikes rolling strong!
List-price is $19.95.
*****
We'll have a review in Velo Vision 13 - but it's safe to say that this book is sure to be a valuable addition to any recumbent enthusiast's collection. At the moment it's available direct from the US publisher (they ship worldwide - just click the cover image here to get to an online shop) but it should soon be available via online booksellers and probably some specialist dealers , too.

Your comments ...From: Dave Williams ([email protected]) on 12 January 2004 |
The review in Velovision (1) was not favourable in terms of the quality of the images and the production.
Is the new version improved? |

Many moons ago, after reading about, "Out Your Backdoor," in, "Bike Culture Quarterly," I eagerly typed it into the search engine.
I didn't actually find the website I was looking for and was rather surprised by the 100's of sites I encountered on a rather messy topic. Very odd indeed. |

Book just arrived - picture quality is MUCH better. I believe this is because the first book was 'print on demand' - only financially realistic way to get it published - whereas demand has now allowed this new edition to be printed using more traditional print techniques. More in issue 13 when I've have more of a chance to read it! |

I have noz read this book and will not do so. Gunare Fehlau wrote a book called "Das Modul bike". He proved that he did not have a clue. ****DELETED**** Ralf, you're entitled to your views but I have deleted the rest of your comment as it contains material that is possibly libellous. Peter Eland |

Gosh, I'd love to know what Ralf said. Sounds exciting :-) |

Thank goodness for Peters footnote, for a minute I thought Ralf had had the author DELETED - Terminator style, and just for writing a book !!! |

I read what Ralf wrote this morning but can't remember what it was. He doesn't seem to like Gunnar Fehlau much.
Ayup Pete. Are you going to get one of those fancy stamp machines Carlton was on about on Bike Biz? You could run a competition to design the Velovision stamp. |

Dunno how you got a BikeBiz password Seamus... they let anyone in these days...
For those who haven't seen, this is Royal Mail's new 'SmartStamp' service which lets small businesses print out stamps using a normal computer printer. See:

I would LOVE to use it if only I didn't have about a year of franking machine contract which I can't easily get out of. I'd better leave it at that or I'm liable to write something libellous about the morals of the franking machine industry... |
