Greenspeed's tailbox teaser
The Australian trike maker releases concept art for four possible designs - and wants your input
The tailbox is intended as weatherproof, lockable and aerodynamics-enhancing storage for recumbent trikers - but Ian Sims is still considering the details of the design. Click the image for the full-size JPG:

The request was first made on the [email protected] mailing list a few weeks ago, and much discussion ensued. Ian Sim's original request for comments also includes further details about each of the designs, so check it out first. Then, a few thought-provoking contributions are, for example, here and here. To add your own views, use the comments system, email Ian Sims or subscribe to the Trikes mailing list.
In other news, Greenspeed have announced that the GT3, their 'mass-production' 16"-wheeled folding trike (which we'll be reviewing in issue 13) will be priced at AUD 2950 (Australian Dollars), with worldwide shipping expected to cost around an additional AUD 300. That translates to a total of around £1355 or just under 2000 Euros according to here. Most other models retain 2003 prices for 2004, despite some component upgrades.
Further - they're working with Pantour Hubs on a possible full-suspension trike... - A 'Ute' trike design with large load-carrying back end is in the pipeline too...
- A new race trike is under development - The handcycle version of the Greenspeed will be fitted with the folding hinge like the GT3 as part of a complete redesign - Into 2005 or beyond smaller and race-oriented versions of the GT3 are on the cards - A head-out fairing, disk wheels and more are under development...

Is that right? 1300 quid for a "proper" trike !! |
From: Peter Eland ([email protected]) on 05 February 2004 |
I've just emailed Greenspeed to check that - I suppose it's possible that VAT, import duties etc might have to be added to get the UK price. Will update the story as soon as I hear back from them. |

Peter,I would think there will be VAT and Import duty on this. |

Andy, I hope you wouldn't consider shopping a fellow member of the cycling community to your employers for a minor importation irregularity, would you?! |

Anyone tried it on a Maximus trike? The Hope discs onthe rear are very sensitive and will lock the wheels even with 100kg in the back. On snow it's terrific fun, but i wish you could lock the differential like we used to do on rally cars, then you could powerslide as well!!! Wheeeee!!! |

Westcountry Recumbents have the GT3 listed at £1650 including shipping, duty and VAT (updated 11/02/04).
Now all I have to do is work out which member(s) of my family I'll have to sell so that I can buy one.
By the way Peter the limit of 30 characters on the email address for the comments means that my normal email address (32 characters long) doesn't fit. If I had a pound for each computer system that could only fit Wriggleswort in the surname column I'd actually be able to buy a GT3 without selling the family. Never mind plan B it is. |

I've just spoken to Westcountry Recumbents and also have heard from Greenspeed. It appears the actual UK price is £1900, including VAT, duty and shipping. The Westcounty page was in error and has been/will be updated - they're having ISP problems just now.
Sorry about the email length limit - I'll see if we can tweak it :-) |

Ahhhhhhhhhh! It's getting worse, if we keep talking about this it's going to be over £2000 soon. Looks like it's plan C now - have more kids and sell them all!
All credit to Ian for trying to get the price down and the trike looks gorgeous especially in the blue. If only the government would see fit and reduce the tax on hpvs, in fact no they should pay us for riding them in this car infested world. |
