Quick roundup

Event updates, latest pedalcar racing newsletter is out, Vision Recumbents soon to be no more, a cycle history website and yet another new trike... plus latest Bike Right report!

Just a quick roundup as I'm in the middle of VV 13 deadline panic:

- Check out the events listing for a few recent additions, including a trike race at the SPEZI, a velomobile meeting and a unicycle convention...

- The latest pedalcars newsletter is out: see www.pedalcars.info from where, no doubt, a link shall very shortly appear to the newsletter itself. It includes a season preview for 2004 and a few notes on organisational changes to the upcoming season.

- Sad news from the USA: it appears Vision Recumbent Bicycles have been forced to wind up their business. One of US's longest running and best-respected manufacturers, Vision offered a wide range of two-wheelers, including a tandem. The news comes from Zach Kaplan, a Vision dealer, who reported a conversation he had with Vision a few weeks ago on the HPV mailing list: you can read his posting here. It seems they're bowing out gracefully, with sale of machinery expected to raise enough money to pay off their creditors.

- Meanwhile thanks to Craig Wrigglesworth for pointing out a new trike for the UK, the Trixstar. A lean-steer trike, it seems to be intended as fun rather than transport: their website says "TRIXSTAR TX.4 is equally at home weaving round your local park, or cruising a seaside promenade" but rather glosses over the idea of using it on the road. Still, it's a bit expensive for a toy: the single-speed/coaster brake version weighs in at £965.00 + VAT and delivery, with a three-speed for £1050.00 + VAT and delivery. Maybe intended mainly for the rental market?

- Bernd Wagner writes: "I would like to invite you for a visit of http://www.walterruett.de, a website, which is dedicated to one of the most successful men in the history of cycling." Happy to pass on the invite, as it's a nicely done website. Unfortunately the English-language version comes courtesy of Google machine translation, so can be a bit cryptic. Still, worth a look if you like cycle racing history.

- Finally, Crispin Bennett's photo report on the latest Bike Right event in Northumberland is now up at:

Main excitement this year (apart from Seamus' birthday of course) looks to have been the attendance of a Leitra velomobile...

  • They all said 'That Leitra will never get up the hills'. Which made it particularly embarrassing to be overtaken by it up hill. Great weekend though!

  • The newsletter is indeed on line.
Included is a report by Darren Carter of the trip several people made to Broadcasting House last Monday for filming the worlds first (and by far the wierdest!) fully televised pedal car race...

  • It was Bike Right 9 and a half and Belleville Rendezvous was being shown so didn't see it.

Just had a look and they didn't at all take the piss, looked like they enjoyed themselves and even had a crash for added authenticity. Wonder if you'll get any of them showing up at Leicester?

  • Indeed, they all loved it, and got the hang of it really quickly. Except the getting in and out bit... Oh, and using the brakes. They were fine in practice, honest! Must have been the red mist.

  • Despite appearances there was no damage.
The single layer fibre glass fairings push back into shape no problem.
"Paul Davies technology where you need it most on a car"?
Basically when you have 25 cars on a 500m circuit for 24 hours you are bound to get one of 2 small bumps here and there so they are designed to be reasonably robust.
However, I didn't know they were that robust!

Not sure the BBC can say the same about the £30K camera though...
