Promoting grassroots cycling in Leicester at the end of March, the velomobile seminar at the SPEZI in April now open for registration, join the World Naked Bike Ride and/or European pedalcar racing events in June, and visit Gothenburg's HPV event in August...
- "Cycling Projects and how to start them" is the subject of a FREE event for the East Midlands at Leicester Town Hall, Saturday 27th March 2004, 1pm to 5pm, reports Roger Lovell (aka the Hilldodger) who seems to now be a Cycling Consultant. Contact him to register: email as above or tel 0116 278 1360 (answerphone). Programme includes workshops on:
. bike recycling projects . open your own bike park . filling in grant support applications . cycling for people with special needs . how to set up a social enterprise . adult cycle training . forming a bike user group . ideas for promoting cycling
- Organiser Joachim Fuchs reports more details from the 5th Velomobile Seminar at the SPEZI, Germersheim, April 23rd. The theme of the conference is 'Towards commercial velomobiles' and a prelimiary programme is now available at:
http://www.velomobile.info/
Joachim adds:
"Although registration is not necessary, I recommend prebooking because of the limited (100) seating for visitors. In addition, you can choose three different lunch menus in advance. The payment for seminar fee and lunch will be before the seminar begins. You will find more details in the PDF file on the website above.
The Velomobile seminar will take place at the "Deutsches Strassenmuseum", which is approx. 1 kilometre away from the railway station. There's a map on the website.
There will be a CD-ROM with the proceedings of the Seminar. Please send an e-mail if you are interested in contributing internet homepages and files to this CD-ROM."

- Roger the Hilldoger sends news of the World Naked Bike Ride:
http://worldnakedride.org/
Needless to say, above link contains nudity so don't click if you (or your boss) will be offended...
There's also a mailing list at Yahoo.
- Pedalcar press-releases proclaim that the European Pedal Car Championships kicks off in Leicester this year:
"This year the Walkers Stadium is hosting the European Pedal Car Championships over the weekend of June 5th/6th. This should be an excellent event as we welcome teams from Wales, France and Italy as well as a host of competitors from across the UK for 12 hours of human powered racing. There is plenty of local interest with several teams from the area competing in various classes."
As ever, all the details are on http://www.pedalcars.info
- Peter Markusson sends preliminary details of the The Gothenburg HPV event, August 14, 2004 in Sweden:
10.00: 200 meter Sprint 12.00: HPV ride around town, with lunch 14.00: HPV exhibit at the Slottskogen park 15.00: Afternoon tea, coffe etc. in the Slottskogen park 17.00: Ride to the Scout Garden 18.00: Dinner at the Scout Garden 19.00: Lectures and slideshows at the Scout Garden 21.00: Sleep, or the Gothenburg Party
"This year we will leave the central parts of the city to avoid the crowd. Last year had a few hundred people harassing us at the exhibition. All leaflets, all info was gone after just one hour. That's just too much for us shy HPV people. And we can find some shadow under the trees at Slottskogen, too. The heat was terrible last year, some of our infamous members bathed in the fountain at the central park."
"This year we hope for more moultoneers, one of them managed over 50Km/h in the 200 meter Sprint 2003. Hopefully, we'll see more Pedersen bikes, too. The recumbent riders will win all prices, as usual, but we hope there will be more of everything with wheels. 2003 saw one, fully faired recumbent win three prices: 200 meter Sprint, Most Beautiful Vehicle, Best Technical Solution, We had two competing KMX Karts last year, will there be more of them now?"

Roger. What catagory of Cycling Project does the World Naked Ride qualify as? Promoting cycling? Social enterprise? 'Adult' cycle training/ or Cycling for people with special interests...... sorry, special needs?
(And with that, John J steps aside to allow someone to make the obvious 'Open your own bike park' joke) |

I can't get the link to the World Naked Ride to work - or is it just me ? Crispin |
From: Leicester's most (etc) on 17 March 2004 |
John, I think is comes under Adult Cycle Promotion, a new category I've just added.
I'd like to point out that we're not planning a Naked Bike Ride as part of our new event, Ride-Leicester.
Unless there's a demand for it....... |

Not just you Crispin, I can't get it to work now either. Maybe it'll come back, but I've added some extra links for now. |

World Naked Bike Ride is not an adult event. It is for all ages and will happen in cities all over the world. The promoters all have experience organizing and participating in successful naked urban bike rides. Its great fun! Sign up at worldnakedride.org |

I suspect that taking children on a naked bike ride in this hysterical country would raise severe issues re: child abuse. The temporary ice rink set up in York over Christmas would not allow photography on the ice, apparently "because of paedophiles". Sad, but true.
