Baskets for bikes

Velo Vision reader David Hembrow returns to the family tradition of basketmaking - and even offers tail-fairing baskets for recumbents!

David, based in Cambridge, UK, comes from a long line of basketmakers, as described on the history page of his website. Now, he's returned to the family trade:

"I've stopped doing computer software and taken up my family trade of basketmaking. I'm making all the traditional stuff, but am particularly interested in making baskets for bikes. I've a few plans, such as making baskets to fit trailers etc. I've already made a rear fairing basket for recumbent bikes, and plan to race in BHPC events using it this year. Obviously I'd be very keen to make more and sell them. I'd also be interested to hear from other cyclists about what baskets they'd like."

The recumbent tail box is particularly eye-catching:

Any reader comments and ideas on products David could make for cyclists would be gratefully received: please use the comments system below or just email David.

  • The last I have seen of a wickerbasket offered for a high-tec bike, was the basket offered for a Alex Moulton Bike.
Dr. Moulton himself, rode a bike with it 1985 at Zappel, in a competition for the most practical Vehicle.
It did look quite different, combined with a Fullsized Zipper fairing.

  • Well done David. It's great to see traditional, sustainable crafts. Just have to save my pennies buy the tailbox
