CycleFest 2004

Tenth anniversary edition of Lancaster's eclectic cycling festival in August will be the last - be sure to be there.

Co-organiser John Bradshaw recently sent me details of the upcoming event, which runs from 4th to 9th August. Like previous Cyclefests, though, the focus of the event is sure to be on the weekend, the 7-8th.

Details follow below. John also asked me to mention that technical difficulties have delayed updating the Cyclefest website but that it should show full details in due course. As you'll see registration forms etc can be downloaded direct from this page. I'll also keep the Velo Vision site current with any updates.

Cyclefest is the UK's only event all about specilised bikes, HPV and interesting pedal-power of all sorts. In comparison to Germany's SPEZI it's smaller (several hundred, rather than several thousand participants), is much less of a trade show and more a gathering of enthusiasts. In recent years it has taken place every two years, so we've only covered one previous event in Velo Vision (Issue 7). Or see here for my web report on the event. I'll certainly be there this year!

So here's this year's info:

Cyclefest 2004: CFx

It's a whole decade since the first CycleFest happened, at a time when the cycling scene was beginning to change increasingly interestingly, and so there have been a great number of developments in the intervening years, many of which were to be seen at the following CycleFest. Unsurprisingly, the rate of change now seems to have naturally declined somewhat, so this year it seems reasonable to take the opportunity to celebrate ten years of progress and enjoyment, to call this year's event CFx - and to make it the last one, at least for a time.

Certainly, CF is not going out with a whimper - the Programme promises interest, activity and fun - as usual!

  • A high point will be an illustrated talk on Saturday evening by Inspired Cycle Engineering about the Trice, the well established but constantly evolving recumbent trike. They'll be coming all the way up from Cornwall with a big van full of gorgeous trikes to dribble over and even ride - see more here: www.ice.hpv.co.uk

  • Not just them, but Bob Tennant, of MicWic and the Linear devices et al, will be telling us about some interesting developments in the use of recumbents in public services and specialised applications. See their new model here: www.swindonlink.com/MICWIC/

  • This year we will also be flattered by the culmination of this year's Eco-Trip at CF. They will be formally welcomed on Thursday evening, followed by a talk all about these inspiring European Eco-Trips. Read more here: http://ecotrip.info/

  • There will be a repeat of the well supported 2002 Hill Climb late on Saturday afternoon, as well as the CF's Folding and Fun races interleaved with the BHPC Championship taking place as usual on Sunday at the Salt Ayre Circuit.

  • As it may be The Final CycleFest, it's appropriate to recall the fact that The First CycleFest, in 1994, had what is thought to be the World's First Pedersen-Only Race, and that's worth doing again too! (Remember, 'Gentlemanly Behaviour' is worth more points than crude speed, and many will recall Messrs Donnan & Tigwell losing points for 'Unsociability' when they rode off way out in front......)

  • CF'94 also saw what AM confirmed was The World's First Moulton-Only Race (and he took part), so we'll have another one of those too - but compared to the Ped's it'll be over much more quickly.

  • Mike Burrows will be there again, this time with a few 8-Freights to see and try, and loads of other interesting people too.

The CF graphics, from Anthea Gage this year, are looking more than good, as will the tee and sweat shirts - but you'll just have to wait to see.....

We'll be having more talks, live music (Boogie Bill is returning!), exhibitions of CF-related photographs and paintings, Social Rides on each day and repeated indulgence in ice creams and real ale as usual, of course, with snacks also available in the Social Bar most of the time.

If you need any more info. or help, feel free to contact the Organisers at the e-addresses: [email protected], [email protected] but PLEASE include "CycleFest" in the 'Subject' heading so it's known to be it's important - there's a lot of (instantly deleted) junk mail... if you are in analogue rather than digital mode, try +44(0)1524 66658 (but please note that John's work e-mail address and telephone number as advertised last time are now defunct). Also see the soon-to-be-updated website, which does already have plenty of info from past events: www.cyclefest.net

Registration

The Registration Form (with no cost increase over 2002) can be downloaded as a Word document (60k) or as a PDF file (44k).

  • Booking for camping is still at £5 a night. A choice of breakfasts will be available on campus, or in town. Details, typical prices and locations will be available nearer the time.

  • For rooms on the campus, as before you'll need to contact the College Conference Officer directly. This year you book for the room (with self-catering facilities) at £17.50 per night, and can then pay for a big breakfast (along with some of the campers) each morning - but if you're not hungry when you wake up, no money wasted! Most rooms are single and will be in Waddell Hall, but there will be a few double rooms available in Hornby Hall - but book early for these. Please contact:

    Andrew Whitehead - Conference Officer,
    St.Martin's College,
    Lancaster LA1 3JD
    UK
    Tel: +44(0)1524 384460
(but don't try to book for CFx itself with him!)

There should be no problems with accommodation, as there's plenty of camping space well away from the road and the public, and loads of rooms available too. Naturally there are local hotels and B&Bs; too, and information on that can be obtained from Lancaster Tourist Office, on +44(0)1524 582393.

  • Unlikely as it may seem, at Spokesfest 2 I gave out loads of bottles of beer. Won't be doing that again.

At another Spokesfest and at last Cyclefest I was giving out ice-lollies though I can't imagine why.

  • From: John Bradshaw ([email protected]) on 28 May 2004
  • Hey - this is sounding just as promising as ever! Y'know, sitting back and thinking about it, apart from all the ways I've tried to describe CF in the past it's really all about interesting characters on bikes, isn't it?
Looking forward to seeing y'all again!
    John
