Byke Kultuur Never 21 is out

Seamus King announces that the latest edition of his web publication is here or, if that doesn't work, here. "Loads of News, inexpensive recumbent trikes, recumbents in Britain, letters, coming events, websites with links to BKN".

HPV Racing at Eastway

Eastway Cycle Circuit: Monday 14th June 7pm

London dealers and HPV people Bikefix write in to remind all that everyone, especially first-timers, are welcome at this London-area event. They will have bikes to hire if you don't have an HPV of your own. More at the BHPC website.

Wheel Thing 2004

Fun cycling/eco vehicle event in Bath: see here for the details. Camping available June 9-14. 'Walcot Nation Day' is June 13, apparently. Partly-organised by Cycles Maximus so a good time is pretty much sure to be had by all...

Cycles in St Etienne

Interesting cycle collection at this industrial museum in France:

Cycle Heritage Leicester win funding.

The press release reads: Cyclemagic, the community based cycling organisation, has been awarded £38,500 by the Heritage Lottery Fund towards its unique Cycle Heritage Leicester project. Match funding for the £95,000 two-year project will come from Leicester City Council and Leicester Museums. Long overshadowed by large-scale bicycle manufacture in neighbouring cities, the aim of Cycle Heritage Leicester is to highlight the important part the city has played in the social and sporting development of cycling in the UK.

Officially launched on May 22nd the project will research and record the rich and varied history of cycling in Leicester from the world famous racing stadiums of the 1880s through to unique events such as the recent Spokesfests and the world's largest gathering of Penny Farthings for 120 years.

Working with schools and community groups the project will record a wide variety of memories from current and former cyclists and also research the history of the city's many early cycling clubs, manufactures and well known figures. In partnership with Leicester Museums a web based archive of photographs and historic documents will be created.

Cycle Heritage Leicester will also promote cycling history with events and exhibitions of photography, research, bicycles and ephemeron. The project finale in May 2006 will be a major celebration of the history of cycling on Leicester's Abbey Park.

  • Think Shaymose has lost it a lot with Byke Kultuur 21.

With the xception of the cheap trikes, and that was little more than someone elses nice photos, there was rugger ball to it.

Think he should pack it in if that s the best he can do.

  • Maybe you're right. I think I've lost the knack for churning out vast tracts of informative/entertaining/ whatever articles and writing them with an amusing edge. Even I find what I've written a little dull now. Time for a lay-off I think.

The cheap trikes article should have been better. I should have hired or borrowed a Stein Roadshark off Rob Hague and written about that. It'd be interesting to find out how good or bad they really are compared to any of the BIG 3 which cost many times more.

There's an idea for anyone to take up; Stein Roadshark vs Trice Classic.

To be sure I've unimpressed with BKN since issue 15 (I'm quite proud of that one) though I was rather pleased with the bit about the Belvoir Castle Weekend in the last issue .

Has anyone seen my cuthroat razor? Or my rope? Gun?

  • I still look forward to the thing even though I live in California and ride an upright.

  • Don't give up Seamus! We all love you really. Maybe we should all make an effort to contribute something?

  • Well done Hilldodger and team! sounds a wonderful project. Maybe we in York, with our history of cycling (if not much manufacture)should be planning something along similar lines?

  • What am I bid for my stash of pics of luminaries Mick Thomas, Jim McGurn, Mike West, Pete Eland, Sara Robin, Jason Patient and Tom Mason from the 80's and 90's?

  • You should look at setting up an archive of cycling stuff in York - but on cycling history Leicester trounces York. :-)

Expect to see you all here for a huge celebration of cycling history in May 2006 - and we already have plans for a major spectacle!

  • From: Arch (@workalready) on 21 May 2004
  • Roger, I've told you a hundred times, I'm not prepared to recreate your nude cycling photos live on stage...

  • From: rabid (not really) on 21 May 2004
  • Ayup Arch.

I'll bet you'd do it if some cakes was offered;-)

  • Hey Sue, You fancy dressing up as a crocodile and riding on the back of a Libra?

  • From: andy scaife ([email protected]) on 21 May 2004
  • it'll be on telly!

  • From: Arch (backingoff@asharpishpace) on 21 May 2004
  • A crocodile? I'm not sure I want to ask...

  • From: Arch ((sighing)) on 21 May 2004
  • ...but I going to have to aren't I? Why a crocodile? What telly? Why? generally.

The problem with offering cake Rog, is that too much of it and you need special wide angle lenses.

  • From: worlds most handsome (cycling historian) on 21 May 2004
  • Arch, that wasn't my comment!

  • From: Arch (@herdesk) on 21 May 2004
  • Sorry, Rog, was confusing Ayup and Tararabit. Rabid, I've realised who you are now...

  • From: the worlds most handsome (cycling historian) on 22 May 2004
  • that's o'right m'duc.

  • From: Le Chien! ([email protected]) on 22 May 2004
  • Just to say I got on the Streetmachine today and only did about 12 miles but it suddenly came back to me.... "That's why I bought a good recumbent"!
    Grinning a lot tonight.

  • From: S (etc) on 24 May 2004
  • So why did you buy a (good) recumbent?

  • From: Le Chien (Hells waiting room!) on 24 May 2004
  • I bought it cos I am a fat lardy type, really am quite fond of my arse and my wrists, and upwrongs were "Getting to me a bit".
ALso if I ride a recumbent I can look more like my hero Seamus!

  • From: . (.) on 25 May 2004
  • ...not nearly lardy enough 'dog;-)

  • From: The Dorg Collective (EVERYWHERE!!!) on 26 May 2004
