Off to CycleVision

I'll be away at the Lelystad recumbent event in the Netherlands for the next few days. The Velo Vision office is now closed, and will reopen on Wednesday the 9th June...

Apologies for the recent shortage of web stories - have been busy preparing for mailing Issue 14 as soon as I'm back. Am storing them all up for later - so please do keep on sending in tip-offs about intersting things you come across. They are all appreciated and will - eventually - mostly get used!

Have also been preparing for this trip to CycleVision, the huge, mainly-recumbents event in the Netherlands which takes place at the weekend (the 5th and 6th). This year more attractions than ever are promised - including Tallbikes and the (motorised) recumbent trike microlight aircraft. We've reported on previous events in Issues 11, 7 and 3 of the magazine.

I will be taking the Go-Bike, not much tweaked since the Ireland trip, and will be doing my usual

- Train to Newcastle
- Cycle to North Shields ferry port
- Ferry overnight to Ijmuiden
- Cycle via Amsterdam to Lelysad

journey - and hope to be joined by a number of other riders taking today's (Wednesday's) ferry, so should be an enjoyable group ride over. Let's hope we stay a bit dryer than two years ago!

  • I hope Cyclevision is more interesting than the boring one I went to in 02. And what an depressing venue.

  • From: jes (@pedalcars.info) on 02 June 2004
  • Well, there's always the European Pedal Car Championships next weekend to tickle your fancy instead.

12 hours of racing split over 2 days in the glamorous surroundings of a Leicester school.

    All details on www.pedalcars.info

Sorry to plug it on this forum but I was about to send Peter a press release when I read this article...

  • From: Bryan Ball ([email protected]) on 02 June 2004
  • I will probably only do one day of CycleVision this year. The big Happy Mosel Bicycle festival is also this weekend and I will probably split time between them.

  • From: Roger the Hilldodger (I Hate the Heritage Lottery ) on 02 June 2004
  • Jes, thanks for organising the Europeans less than a mile from my home. Sorry we couldn't enter - blame the Heritage Lottery Fund. Did I mention I hate the Heritage Lottery Fund?

RtH (who really hates the Heritage Lottery Fund)

  • From: Arch (@work) on 03 June 2004
  • Hey Rog, What do you think of the Heritage Lottery Fund?

  • From: Arch (thinking of home) on 03 June 2004
  • Which school? I'm trying to think of anywhere glamorous in Leicester, apart from RtH's dodgy Victorian photographic parlour ;-)

  • From: Antony (at Pedalcars dot info) on 03 June 2004
  • Arch, like the man Jes says, all the details are on www.pedalcars.info

Specifically, on the "Leicester" page within the Events section, at http://www.pedalcars.info/events/info.asp?VenueID=leicester

It would be nice to have a CoC entry at some point in the future, so you'd be most welcome to come along and take a look at what we do - see you there?

    :)

  • From: Antony (again) on 03 June 2004
  • PS. "The press release reads: Cyclemagic, the community based cycling organisation, has been awarded £38,500 by the Heritage Lottery Fund"

I remember hating the last people who gave me more cash than I owe on my mortgage, too.

Or did they take it back again?

  • From: Arch (@work) on 03 June 2004
  • A CoC pedal car! A blur of green and purple... Shame I'm busy this weekend. Mind you I've been trying to build a Dutch Recumbent Kit for months, so how long a pedal car would take, I dread to think...

  • From: Antony (again) on 03 June 2004
  • Sue, if you want to put a CoC team together for a race later in the year (this weekend being a tad short-notice, and all!), give us a shout and we can almost certainly find one to lend you for the day.

    :)

Same applies to anyone else thinking it looks like it might be fun to try without wanting to commit to building or buying a car, too (provided you don't all want to try it at the same weekend - we've only one or two spares!).

For instance, we're lending a car to a team of mountain bikers from Single Track magazine (singletrackworld.com) this weekend. Should be interesting...

  • From: Arch (Just about to not be@work) on 03 June 2004
  • It's tempting. How many are a team? (I know, the website probably tells me...) We are hoping to be having fun in August, which is a more quiet month for us. I will file the idea away and see what the others think. In the meantime, have fun in my home town, and make sure you get a good curry under your belts!

  • From: Roger the Hilldodger (I hate the Heritage Lottery) on 03 June 2004
  • £38,500 has been awarded and they've told everyone about it. Trouble is, I haven't got the money yet and probably wont for serveral weeks.

Oh, and they're now saying I'm not allowed to pay myself to do the project and will have to employ someone else.

  • From: Antony (again) on 04 June 2004
  • Sue, for anyone over 16, a team is up to four people (we also have age classes for under-16, u-14 and u-12, who can have 6 drivers; and a solo class if you can't persuade anyone else to join you!). Calendar is at http://www.pedalcars.info/events/calendar.asp
If you can make Preston in July, it's possibly your closest event (just). Plus it's a fantastic track. :)

Drop me an email ([email protected]) if you want a car sorting for you!

Roger, for £38,500 I'll come and work for you. That is the annual salary, yes?
    ;)

  • From: Arch (@her desk) on 04 June 2004
  • Bummer! How about employing Hoger the Rilldodger, Leicester's second handsomest cycling historian? Seriously, though, that's a right pain. Can you 'employ' someone, who then just pays you the money? Coincidentally, I've just heard that one of my potential PhD funding sources has fallen through...

  • From: Arch (taking a breather) on 04 June 2004
  • Sadly I will be working on the 17th July. Maybe in August sometime, when I get the chance of time off. Just a question of whether I can drum up enough interest among my colleagues... Jase? Chris? Tom? Anyone?

  • From: Antony (again) on 04 June 2004
  • Shame about Preston.

South Berkshire is at the end of August, but it's a very long way from York. It's about 3:30 from Sheffield, on a good day, in a decent car, with no traffic.

Curborough in September, maybe? Fast, open, smooth; a nice gentle introduction to the sport.

Oh, and a collection of teams fighting tooth and nail to settle various championship positions...

    :)

  • From: Tom ([email protected]....) on 04 June 2004
  • Never envisaged meself pedalling a giant testicle round a track, but could be interesting... if I can get fit, (ie not-in-bad-health, for those of you who don't know me) by then. Could we put a CofC-truck-shaped body on a pedalcar?

  • From: Arch (@work) on 04 June 2004
  • Tom, you're not being entirely serious, are you... The wind resistance of a mock up CoC wagon would be enormous... I will keep Curborough in mind anyway...

  • From: I now love the (Heritage Lottery Fund) on 04 June 2004
  • All sorted! Amazing what happens well you tell them to stuff it all and "I'm about to send out a press release saying why I can't work with the HLF" Might also have something to do with the Cyclemagic MP being Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt. Friends in high places, me.

  • From: S (etc) on 07 June 2004
  • Thirty eight and a half thou? Drinks on Rog then, hmm.

  • From: I quite like the (Heritage Lottery Fund) on 07 June 2004
  • I'll buy you a pint at the Criterion in Leicester anytime.
