Maya Pedal gets another 450 bikesThe human-powered machines organisation in Guatemala, featured in Velo Vision 13, is going from strength to strength... Rather belatedly, here's a report dated several weeks ago from Maya Pedal's US partner organisation, Bikes not Bombs: *** We need volunteers to help load up 450 bicycles headed to the Maya Pedal project in the Chimaltenango region of Guatemala. We sent bikes to this fascinating project once before in October 2001, and you may remember hearing about the pedal-powered grain grinders, coffee depulpers, electricity generators, cement tile vibrators, and well pumps that Maya Pedal creates out of used bicycles. These machines ("bici-maquinas") empower rural farmers in villages without electricity. Maya Pedal also works with small bike businesses to rebuild many of the bikes we send and put them back on the road. Now, just over two years later, Maya Pedal is doing better than ever. They've received lots of press, including a recent article in the UK magazine Velo Vision, and as a result they've received more international support. Also, the Guatemalan manufacturer of grain grinders has taken notice of Maya Pedal's innovation in attaching these grinders to bicycles, and the manufacturer is now working with Maya Pedal to redesign their grinders for a better fit with the pedal-powered machines. *** There's more about Maya Pedal, and how to donate, at: http://www.bikesnotbombs.org/maya-pedal.htm Support, donations and help in kind are always much appreciated.
