Battle Mountain racing underwaySpeedbikes attempt once again to break records in Nevada No new speed records after the first three days of the World Human Powered Speed Challenge, an annual get-together of the world's fastest bikes. Now in its fifth year, the event takes place on a phenomonally long, flat and straight bit of minor road at altitude, near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The teams taking part are hoping that the next few days - it runs until Saturday - will see a new benchmark or two set. The current record holder, Sam Whittingham in a Varna speedbike, is the fastest so far over the flying 200m course, at around 76mph (almost 130km/h). His record is 82mph. Daily illustrated reports are being posted by Dave Larrington: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are already available as I write this. Posted on 16 September 2004 Your comments ...
