Cycle 2004

We're back from the Cycle 2004 show in London - a report will appear here shortly.

The Cycle 2004 Show was based at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London, and was open to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

More later as soon as I've caught up a bit!

Meanwhile, reports are already up at The Folding Society website, Singletrack magazine (Part 1, Part 2) and BikeBiz (Part 1, Part 2).

  • So was it any good?

  • From: Norti Rascal (@hmp.com) on 23 September 2004
  • The world's top bicycle designer was there - talking at people - so it must have been good.

  • First day was good!

Velo Vision is on stand 219a, not 205 as previously thought, by the way...

  • 'sfunny, On the way home I was thinking what an oddd posting I'd made on here. Asking if an event had been good before it had happened.

  • I did wonder if i'd slipped through a wormhole or something! More likely for me that I'd just slept for 5 days and not realised. Ahhh...sleep... I remember that.

  • I enjoyed the show. I was there mainly to meet/find suppliers for my shop. However, I am a cyclist, so I took time to look at things of personal, rather than commercial interest. For some time, I've wandered about recumbents. ( I'm more convinced by the idea of a trike) Now that there are some that compare in price with a reasonable safety bike, I suppose it's only a matter of time! I daren't go to Cornwall without a bucket of money! From a budget point of view, the adult KMX is a great introduction. The test one was adjusted far too small, but fun nevertheless.
It's always good to meet the people behind the voices on the 'phone and the bylines in the mags.
    I'll go again.

  • Peter,

It was good to see you at Cycle 2004.
Hope you had a great time?
Even though, I don't think the more alternative cycle trade were that well represented.

  • How well the Family-Bikes worked, in the try-out area, was a revelation; The front childseat even had a teeny chainset to drive the front wheel. This gave a sense of participation that my 3 1/2 year old really enjoyed. Step-through frame, a good support stand, and no wobbles (on a rear-mounted seat, he leans out to get a view of the road). Blimey, I sound like a sales rep.

In the interests of balance, it's also worth pointing out this page at Kryptonite:

    and

Doesn't seem to be limited to US customers or anything silly.

  • Incidentally, There is a feature on the pedal car 24 hour race in the current Singletrack magazine. very amusing, and I can see the addictive quality. Best I keep away then!

  • Nearly, Andy!

Singletrack were actually at the European Pedal Car Championship event in early June (not our 24). It's a very nice write-up, and (blatant plug - sorry Peter!) if you want a DVD of their experience, copies can be bought from our shop - http://www.pedalcars.info/shop/

Would be great to see a "Bike Rescue" team at a race...

    ;)

  • From: jes (@gcre) on 28 September 2004
  • I can probably find you a car to compete in.
Ready to race at the circuit on the day as we did for Singeltrack.
    Just say the word.

  • From: andy Scaife (terrified@prospect) on 29 September 2004
  • I dunno Anthony! My guys are mostly students, and they break anything I give them (including park chain tools!!!). How about a Moultoneers team? How about a car based on two moulton frames, with seat in between, and complete with full suspension!
    But that's a Mini isn't it?

  • From: andy scaife (foaming@mouth) on 29 September 2004
  • What am I saying? Anyone who has ridden in one knows that Minis don't have suspension! (biscuit tin strapped to a skateboard).
We could have a Yorkies team, with a longboat-styled car.
Or what about 'Team Velovision', using Peter's engineering skills? Worth an article in the mag, Peter?
So email me and tell me how we can get a team together. What are the regs for car construction, and are nearly all the races in the south like the BHPC?

  • From: jes ([email protected]) on 01 October 2004
  • andy,

Send me your proper e-mail address and I'll sned you all the information you need!

    Also, browse www.pedalcars.info

  • From: andy scaife ([email protected]) on 01 October 2004
  • Sned away, Jes. I'll look forward to a good snedding.

  • From: jes (@pleddecras.fino) on 01 October 2004
  • Consider yourself well and truly snedded before the end of the weekend

  • From: Antony (at pedalcars dot info) on 05 October 2004
  • Andy, yours wouldn't be the first team full of people who break everything. Besides, you're Bike Rescue, so you could call yourself out to fix it...

And we get as far north as Preston, if that helps.

    :)

PS. Hmm, a Velo Vision article on pedal car racing? Now there's an idea - there hasn't been one of them since issue three! ;-)
