Inter-show roundup

A cycling film on BBC2 on Tuesday - Maximus team return to the Scrapheap - Interest needed for recumbent jacket - Bike Hub's website goes live - a new separable bike - and calling Mr Wilson!

A quick round-up after the London show, and before I go off to Las Vegas for Interbike next week...

A cycling film on UK TV

Seamus King of the Cycling Film List writes:

Tuesday 1.30pm on BBC2: The 39 Steps (1959)

Directed by Ralph Thomas, this classic British thriller, based on the novel by John Buchan, follows the travails of Richard Hannay (Kenneth More) after he is framed for murder, to clear his name he must discover the secret of the 39 steps. Much of the film was shot on location in Scotland, including a sequence in which he avoids the police on racing bike 'borrowed' from The Gallows Cafe and Motor Mart, where the Freewheelers of Clackmannan set out on their cycle ride. Later he dramatically breaks his chain as he crosses the bridge over the River Balvag at Balquhidder. More information on this film, including photos of the cycling scenes, can be found at... http://www.scotlandthemovie.com/movies/step59a.html.
ta-ta, Seamus.

Cycles Max return to Scrapheap Challenge on 17th Oct

After their victory in the previous episode a team from Cycles Maximus compete again in the 17th October episode of Channel 4's Scrapheap Challenge.

Who wants a recumbent jacket?

A number of readers have contacted me about obtaining the 'Layback' recumbent jacket from Freestyle Sports which we reviewed in Issue 15. It now appears that Freestyle are waiting until they've received enough expressions of interest before they'll make another batch - so if you are seriously considering buying one, please do contact them to register your interest. It did seem a well thought-out product and is the only recumbent-specific rain jacket on the market at the moment...

Bike Hub website goes live

The website set up as a one-stop-shop for cyclists and potential cyclists in the UK and funded by the 'Bike Hub' industry levy (to which Velo Vision contributes voluntarily) is now live at

http://www.bikeforall.net/

Editor is Carlton Reid also of trade site bikebiz.com. The site is still in its early stages, and will be expanded and refined as time goes on. Feedback is welcome.

New separable IXI bike

Thanks to Steve Watkin for pointing out the IXI Bike: www.ixibike.com which is a stylish little thing from the USA, with a frame which splits in two for storage/transport. It also sports a toothed belt drive, a concealed puncture kit in the seatpost and quick-release bars and stem. A good range of accessories are also available. Price is $1099 for the non-separable, and $1289 for the separable version. We'll try to find out more for next issue...

Calling a lost subscriber

Finally, if Mr J S L Wilson of Edinburgh is reading this, please get in touch! I've had your Issue 15 returned as 'gone away' but have no new address for you - and the phone number I have appears to be disconnected.

Similarly, if anyone is missing an issue which you've been expecting - please just get in touch ASAP! Magazines do occasionally (and, unfortunately, increasingly) get lost in the post - I do even make a few errors too! If this happens I am keen to set thing right as fast as possible, and usually send out replacements first class the same day. But if I don't know about it I can't fix it...

  • Almost, Seamus. It was today, Wednesday, and very good it was. It cost me 2 hours work though!
Lovely pale blue bike used as the 'decoy' to lead the police away. What was it?

  • Toyed, briefly, with wagging work to watch the film. Think I got the wrong channel too.

  • As far as I can recall, in the dreadful '70s remake of this superb film, Robert powell (Hannay) does not ride a bike at all, thereby denying us the opportunity of shouting "Christ on a bike!".

  • Andy, you owe me a keyboard!
