Human Power Technical Journal archive online

A vast archive of material from 55 issues of the IHPVA's technical journal is now freely available on the web, or at high-res on a CD-ROM...

Richard Ballantine's press release says it all, really - so here it is. This is a truly splendid resource: congratulations to all concerned.

HUMAN POWER ARCHIVE - CD-ROM

IHPVA General Announcement
From: Richard Ballantine, IHPVA Chair
26 September 2004

The HUMAN POWER Archive is a compilation of the issues of HUMAN POWER - The Technical Journal of the IHPVA, published from 1976 to 2004. As IHPVA cofounder Chester Kyle writes in the Introduction, the HP Archive is "an essential reference to those who really want to know what makes human-powered vehicles work."

The HP Archive is electronic and is indexed and searchable. It is online, and also available as a CD-ROM which comes complete with all of the programs needed to access the index and issues. There is also a new printable manual index which makes existing paper collections of HUMAN POWER more useful and valuable than before.

The HP Archive was produced by Dave Wilson, editor of HUMAN POWER from 1984 to 2002, aided by a group of volunteers known as 'Dave's Band'. It took some two years to create the Archive. Dave then paid for pressing 1,000 CD-ROMs of the Archive, and gave them to the IHPVA and also directly to IHPVA member groups.

In North America, the HPVA raised objections to distribution of the HP Archive, claiming possible copyright infringement. However, an attorney specialising in copyright law advised Dave that the project is in the clear. After due consultation and deliberation, the IHPVA Board has voted to support the free promotion and distribution of the HP Archive. See

http://www.ihpva.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

for further information.

The HP Archive is currently online at: http://www.ihpva.org/HParchive/

and at the site of the Netherlands NVHPV: http://humanpower.ligfiets.net/html

and also at http://www.bikesarefun.org/ihpva/html/intro.htm

The CD-ROMs are available from many IHPVA member organisations; check web sites for availability and prices. The HPVA refused delivery of 300 CD-ROMS for North America. These are being held in trust for the HPVA. In the meantime, the IHPVA has 140 CD-ROMs available on a first-come, first-served basis, limit one to a customer, via IHPVA Director of Online Services Brian Wilson. The CD is free, there is a nominal $4.00 charge for packing and shipping within the US, and $5.00 for outside the US. Check current availability at http://www.ihpva.org/HParchive/ or send an email to [email protected] or phone Brian Wilson at +1 541-368-4120.
