Further update...Gobike European availability - Kryptonite vs Bic pens - the bicycle flamethrower - Shimano awards for cycle projects - Rowing bike championships - Aerorider velomobile finds hydrogen application All the stuff I forgot yesterday :-) GoBike distribution update I'll see the GoBike folding bike makers next week at Interbike, but I've been informed already that they have distribution set up for Italy and the Benelux countries, with the bikes expected to be available in December or early next year. The Benelux distributor's website has some good pics and info. As yet, no news of Uk distribution arrangements - but at least getting one from across the channel will be easier than getting one direct from Canada... Kryptonite vs Bic As has been reported all over the internet recently, tubular-style locks made by Kryptonite and others can be opened in seconds using the lid off a cheap pen. Worse, the problem has been known about for over a decade, yet the manufacturers persisted in selling locks which, it turns out, offer little more than a visual deterrent. Now, Kryptonite (but as yet no other brands) have announced a free product exchange scheme for affected locks. Details are on http://www.kryptonitelock.com/ but a clearer explanation is the UK importer's site. Of course it wasn't long before Kryptonite became the butt of internet humour: see examples here (via Velorution) and here (via BikeBiz). Bicycle flamethrower Roger the Hilldodger sends this splendid link: http://www.monkeyview.net/id/20/slouchcycles/100_0193.vhtml and is now threatening to make one... Turns out the flamethrower is part of a rather splendid-looking show from Cyclecide, described by something called 'Laughing Squid' thus: "The Bike Rodeo is a touring, punk rock bicycle amusement park and showcase of modified bicycles, such as the tall bike (two bicycle frames welded together), the bicycle chopper, the fire breathing Chupacabra, the bottle rocket armed Homeland Security bike and many more..."Too dumb to die!" is the motto of these heavy pedal maniacs." They're on tour right now - their Notes from the Road are fun reading if you have a spare moment, though. Might try for an article from them some time... Shimano awards Shimano are putting up 12,500 Euros as prize money for their annual competition to encourage projects which promote bicycle use - entries are very welcome from all sorts of projects, with a closing date at the end of this year. All the details are here. Rowbike champs The Rowingbike European Championships took place recently in the Netherlands - this is an event principally for owners of Thys 222 machines, though others are welcome. 62 competitors took part in this 6th Anniversary event, which Derk Thys estimates at about 15% of the owners of such bikes! Check here for many pictures of the event. Aerorider goes hydrogen Finally, thanks to Yves Bertin on the Velomobile mailing list for a link to Hysun 3000 which uses an Aerorider velomobile as the basis for a hydrogen-powered vehicle. Not the first time HPVs have been used in this way - they provide a ready-made lightweight chassis for assist technology. Greenspeed vehicles are, for example, regularly used in solar racing...
