Utopia take on the ScooterbikeA classy urban recumbent from Germany, the Scooterbike, is the latest addition to the Utopia stable. German manufacturers Utopia are best-known for their semi-custom, long-lived upright machines. According to the Utopia website (German language) the Scooterbike offers 'next-generation comfort'. It was developed by Velvet Liegeraeder from Bergisch Gladbach, Germany - the Bunch Formerly Known as Veloladen Liegeraeder. Their website is only in German and Spanish, by the way. It won several awards in Germany for its styling and very 'finished' construction. Utopia's own philosophy majors on comfort and longevity, and they custom-manufacture high-quality machines, many with very upright riding positions. In some ways, very traditional, but they're also right on top of new technology. I found a review of the SRAM dual-drive hub (the 3x7 replacement) on their site, too (they liked the shifting, but thought shifters and chain might be less robust than its predecessor). Utopia are already assembling Scooterbikes in their rather nice energy-efficient wooden factory. Posted on 12 February 2001 Your comments ...
