Cigarettes clobber CycleVision

The demands of motorsport tobacco sponsorship mean that the event dates are now uncertain... UPDATED - dates now confirmed as 4th and 5th June 2005

UPDATE 18 Jan 2005 - Jack just emailed me to say dates now confirmed as 4th and 5th June 2005

Original story follows:

Jack Dekker of the CycleVision organising committee writes:

Dear Recumbent enthusiasts,

I am very sorry that I must inform you that the date of CycleVision must be changed from the 11-12 June as we had planned. The Marlboro Masters is a car race with a lot of cigarette advertising. However, all such advertising will be banned from the 1st August this year onwards. So to make the race possible the organisers changed the date to the 11 and 12 June, and Zandvoort must comply with this change, as they had agreed before.

Possibly we will change the date to the 4 and 5 June, but more will be clear on Thursday this week. The 4 and 5 June, the first weekend of June is the traditional Cycle Vision weekend and therefore has our favour.

When more information becomes available I will of course email without delay.

  • Well, if Zandvoort is trying for a healthier, greener image, this certainly isn't the way to do it.

  • Or, every cyclist who can could go there, filter to the front of the grid, Advanced Stop Lane style, spread across the whole track and then on the green light, pedal off really slowly, chatting...

  • Shame, but of course without motorsport there would be no Zandvoort to race recumbents on.
The late date change is strange because the cigarette advertising ban date must have been known about a long time since.

We have several events on motor racing circuits (Castle Combe, Curborough, Blackbushe) but the owners of these venues are very well organised and extremely helpful and understanding of our needs, not to say respectful of a different form of racing. It would be great if all venue owners were as good as these are.
