HPVs on ice, and a velomobile video

Ice races in Brantford, Ontario in February, and velomobile news from France, Netherlands and USA...

Joe Mitrovic writes: The Human Powered Transportation Assoc. will be hosting the 3rd annual Ice Bike races in Brantford again in Feb 2005.Event details can be found at http://www.hptabrant.ca/icerace.htm. The 2004 icerace page is here and the 2003 icerace page is here. This year we have a sheltered outdoor rink from 12 noon - 4 and the
indoor ice from 5 - 8 PM . Better and longer than last year. I would be interested in potential number of participants so we can
tailor the event for maximum participation.

Peter Eland adds: Incidenally Pictures of the Minnesota HPV Association 2004 Ice Races can be seen at http://mnhpva.org/ice/2004

Velomobile news

News culled from the Velomobile mailing list:

  • Hurry if you want to bid for a Go-One velomobile on Ebay in the USA: it's very unusual for these to come up secondhand.

  • The Netherlands 'Olliebollentocht' ride for velomobiles was covered by a local TV program. The footage can be downloaded here, hosted by Belgian velomobile enthusiasts.

  • A big welcome to a French velomobile enthusiasts' site: check out www.velomobile.net

  • I'll be ice-biking home from work today, thanks to a sleet storm this afternoon, but more to the point, this Saturday, January 22, we have the "Ice Bike World Championship" that's been running for 14 years now in the Minneapolis/St.Paul area in Minnesota. With so many other ice bike races going on, we may be losing our argument for calling these the World Championship races, but it's a bit of a tradition here.

  • We once did a little play of catching each other on ice that was like ice racing on Kettwiesel trikes. Only Igor ( the catcher) had an uneven advantage as he had a electric motor in his front wheel. it was slipping all the time but still gave him more momentum directionwise than we had...
but trikes on ice is the biggest fun you could imagine...

  • I love playing with Kettweisels! I've only tried two-wheeling and the odd gravelly powerslide, but the thought of triking on ice fills me with envy! A Brox compact on greasy wet streets can be fun too!
