Cycling theme park mooted for DerbyA feasibility study is underway...meanwhile no news from VeloNova in the Netherlands Readers may remember the VeloNova cycling centre idea from the Netherlands which we covered back in Issue 5 of Velo Vision. Illustrated with imaginative concept art by Bauke Muntz, it was an ambitious project to create a 'cycling theme park' and regenerate land around Lelystad in Flevoland. This image shows some ideas for pedal-powered games... Other ideas included a pedal monorail and a human-powered centrifuge... Unfortunately the idea doesn't seems to be progressing, and it was still at the discussion stage when I last talked to its supporters at CycleVision in June 2004. I've attempted without success to get an update. Now, though, a £33m 'Bikeland' cycling theme park has been proposed for Derby, and a feasibility study is underway. It's the brainchild of Jim McGurn of Company of Cyclists, whose main business is running cycle promotion roadshows for local authorities and companies. There's more detail about the project in this article in the Derby Telegraph and some reaction in a follow-up article from a reader. BikeBiz also has an initial report and an in-depth follow-up with more details of what's proposed. A £65,000 feasibility study to determine the economic viability of the idea is underway now, with funding from Derby's regional development agency. Posted on 25 January 2005 Your comments ...
