No less than SIX events for your diary...A grass-roots campaign meet in Leicester, folding bike fun in the USA, Cycling and Society Symposium in Cardiff, European Pedal Car Championships in Monza, Jubilee G8 rides to Edinburgh, and Recumbent Day in the Netherlands... All these are press releases pretty much as I received them, just shortened :-) National Grass-Roots Cycling Conference Saturday March 19th Leicester's Cycle-City Workshop, a monthly forum for cyclists and interested parties from across the city, is to host a second Grass-Roots Cycling Conference on Saturday March 19th. This free event is aimed at local authority staff, cycling groups, school teachers and anyone interested in developing community cycling schemes. Workshops will be held on setting up bike recycling projects, event management and working with the media, cycle skills training schemes, building community cycling tracks and developing cycling initiatives within schools. There will also be opportunities for networking and the chance to visit three of Leicester's most successful cycling projects, Cyclemagic, Bikes4All and the Bike Park. Places are limited and priority will be given to those actively involved in the promotion of cycling or with a remit of developing cycling either within schools or local communities. For further information and to register delegates should e mail [email protected] giving brief details of their organisation and main areas of interest. ROUND UP USA small wheel and folder bike fest. 3-5 June 2005, Philadelphia USA "three days to explore the compact bicycle universe" The Roundup will offer consumers a chance to see bikes from manufacturers such as Airframe, Bazooka, Bernd, Bickerton, Bike Friday, Birdy, Brompton, Dahon, Gaerlan, Koga, Montague, Moulton, PBW, Strida and Swift. The event also will include rides, lectures, a Bike-On-Rail Excursion, tech talks and more. "Compact bikes are big news--and the fastest-growing segment of the bike world. In cities and suburbs, these bikes work and play well with buildings, transit and vehicles. They defy thieves by coming indoors with ease. They commute, tour, stunt and even get out there with mountain and road bikes. In Japan, folding bike clubs and custom fan clubs hold monthly meets," said Michael McGettigan, Trophy Bikes' owner. The Roundup will take place the same weekend as the U.S. Pro Cycling Championship, also held in Philadelphia. Visit www.trophybikes.com for information about last year's event. For information about showing bikes at this year's Roundup, email McGettigan at [email protected]. 2nd Cycling and Society Symposium April 4th and 5th 2005 Dr Ben Fincham of Cardiff University writes: This is an event being held in Cardiff on April 4th and 5th. It is the 2nd Cycling and Society Symposium (the first being at Lancaster last Autumn), the title of which is 'Culture, Community, Policy - Cycling in the 21st Century. There is a website http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/socsi/news/bicycle.html. The aim is to get researchers, activists and policy makers together to discuss a broad range of issues concerning cycling. Third European Pedalcar Championships - Autodrome Monza Italy June 18th and 19th 2005 The folks at Karbyk write:: We are happy to confirm the official dates for the next appointment of the European Championship of Pedal Cars Racing. The third edition will be disputed in the weekend of June 18th and 19th 2005 inside the famous National Autodrome of Monza - Italy. For all information (technical and sporting rules, registrations, schedules, etc.) you can visit our internet address on www.karbyk.com where, on the page devoted to the European 2005 all the details are available, also in .pdf for download. In case of further questions, contact us, we will try to answer as soon as possible... Thanks to the Ares Group there will very probably be some Karbyks available for potential teams that don't have vehicles with four wheels, but who would like to participate. The number of the vehicles that will be available is not fixed - very probably from 3 to 5 Karbyks. We are expecting teams from France, UK, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and ... Italy. In hope of meeting us for 3 days of competition and joy, we send to you our most sincere regards. P.S. Remember that there is a possibility to free camping in Monza's park during this event. Jubilee G8 rides to Edinburgh - arriving Saturday 2nd July 05 Bill Shaw writes: I'm looking for people to cycle to Edinburgh this summer - from everywhere. I hope by now you've heard of the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign (think Bono, Bob Geldof, Vicar of Dibley, Nelson Mandela, white armbands etc). It's a major push by campaigners and aid agencies to focus attention on global poverty in 2005 - when the UK hosts the G8 summit of world leaders in Scotland. People in developing countries often feel they're being forced into the gutter while the rest of the world hurtles past with scant regard to the wellbeing of others or the environment. And cyclists know just how they feel. That's why in previous years so many cyclists have pedalled peacefully for debt-relief and trade justice: to Birmingham, Cologne, Okinawa, Genoa etc. It's a great way to campaign - flying banners and handing out leaflets - and, as an added bonus, an excellent way to introduce newcomers to cycle-touring. When we took a rickshaw from Leeds over the Alps to Genoa in 2001, many of our team were relatively inexperienced cyclists [See Issue 4 of Velo Vision -Ed]. So... how about a team from your neck of the woods? Or interested individuals could maybe join one of the existing rides. You would need to reach Edinburgh for Saturday 2nd July, joining up with others from all the UK for the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY event that afternoon. Further information at http://www.leedstidal.org/g8rides and the main point of contact is the G8 Rides Messageboard on the same website. Post your message there to make sure the right people see it. Netherlands Recumbent Day 20th March 05 Hope the following is pretty close to correct - I translated it from a press release in Dutch :-): The Ligfietsspecialisten is a group of 11 specialist recumbent dealers in the Netherlands, and on the 20th March the group is promoting a 'national recumbent day'. On that day there will be tours and other recumbent activities offered at all of the participating dealers. There's also a competition to win a recumbent. So if anyone buys a recumbent from one of the 11 dealers on the 20th March or in the two weeks following it, they have a chance to get it for free (up to 1500 Euros) and to be declared the 'offically' the 50,000th recumbent sold in (and from) the Netherlands. Other purchases in this period will also have incentives like accessories... the 11 dealers are: 1. Amsterdam: Ligfietswinkel Amsterdam (020-6869396) 2.
