Sun Race save the Sturmey name: eight-speed still on the cardsIntellectual property rights and quite a bit of the machinery belonging to Sturmey Archer have been bought up by the Taiwanese company Sun Race Industries. They apparently plan to revive Sturmey's plans for a new eight-speed hub gear. According to reports on the BikeBiz website Sun Race intend to change their name to Sun Race Sturmey Archer, to reflect their commitment to the brand. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of all this for hub gear fans is the news that Sturmey were in the process of developing a new eight-speed hub gear, and work was well advanced at the time of Sturmey's collapse. Sun Race intend to carry on the development. The hub would apparently have a modular design, based around a four-speed 'base' unit to which a further unit could be added, bringing the gear count up to eight. If you're interested in learning more about the recent upheavals at Sturmey Archer, visit the BikeBiz website. This site, best-known as the trade website for the UK bike industry, also has a 'public' area giving full details of the Sturmey-Archer story.
