Reader survey 2008

A web survey of readers at velovision.com carried out in June/July 2008. Total 167 responses.

Magazine

  • 85% of respondents are subscribers to the magazine, either in print (72%), digital edition (5%) or both (8%). Just under two people (1.86) tend to read each subscription copy on average.
  • Flatteringly for us, when asked "Compared to other magazines, how useful/influential do you find the reviews and adverts in Velo Vision?, 83% said the editorial was "Generally more useful/influential", and for the adverts it was 52%. Advertisers and manufacturers take note!
  • Exactly 81% had bought items 'often' or 'occasionally' after seeing them reviewed in VV. The figure was almost 78% for products advertised in VV.

Website

  • 15% visit 'daily', another 56% visit 'regularly'
  • 63% click on banner ads 'often' or 'occasionally'
  • 23% have clicked on the Google ads which appear on the small ads page.

Reader's bikes:

  • The average number of bike per reader was just over six (6.09). Some respondents noted that the figure they gave was for the number of bikes in the household.
  • The most popular bikes were commuter/hybrid types and recumbents, and 55% said they owned this type of machine. 53% had folding bikes, and the same figure was reported for MTBs. Fuly 40% had touring bikes, 31% had a trailer, either for child or load-carrying, and 28% apparently own a 'vintage bike'.
  • Just over a quarter of readers (27%) had a racing bike, and an impressive 26% have a tandem - or perhaps a share in one!
    Load carrying bikes, at 16%, were less popular (or less easy to accommodate!). Fixed wheel bikes were owned by 15%, child tagalong or trailer bikes by 11%, and unicycles by 11%, too.
  • 34% said they owned other types of bike, and the responses included many types of tricycle, Pino-type tandems, Moultons and many other cycles which for one reason or another didn't fit neatly into one of the other categories.
  • The total replacement value of respondents' cycle collections averaged £5108, with the average value for the most expensive bike at £1818 - skewed just a little by some very expensive tandems, Moultons and recumbents. Average annual cycling spend was £579.

About the readers

  • The majority of responses came from readers in the UK (73%). Both Europe and North America accounted for 11% each, while Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Polynesia etc) came in at 4%. A single response from Asia accounted for 0.7% of the survey total.
  • Respondents were 95% male, 5% female.
  • Average age is 47, with the age profile as follows:
    20-30 - 2%, 31-40 - 20%, 41-50 - 40%, 51-60 - 29% 61-70 - 8%, 71-80 - 1%.
  • 61% have children, 80% are homeowners.
  • Asked about education/qualifications, it appears that over 60% are university graduates, with 18% of those having a further postgraduate qualification. Very close to 20% claimed a professional qualification (doctor, accountant, lawyer, engineer etc).
  • In terms of job type, 'Professional' accounted for 38.6%, 'Technical/IT 23.4%, and Managerial 6.2%.
  • Annual gross income was, on average, £34846 per reader.

About their cycling:

  • On average readers said that cycling had been a significant part of their lives for an average around 6 years - perhaps long enough to catch the bug and get tired of the other mags! The range of responses was from one year to 35, so a wide range of cycling experience is represented.
  • For those that knew how far they ride per year, the average was just over 2900 miles, or around 4500 km. Almost 20% say they ride seven days a week - 17% ride six days, and no fewer than 89% ride three days a week or more.
  • As to the type of cycling they'd done in the last year, most popular was shopping - over 85% had done this by bike. Next up was commuting, at close to 54%. There may have been some overlap on responses with the next questions, which asked about using a bike for business, or for work journeys. Here 52.9% said they had.
  • Cycle touring was also popular, and 53% of readers have gone on a cycle tour involving at least one overnight stay. 31% had gone on a cycle tour of a week or longer, and over 30% travelled overseas for a cycling holiday. 28% had taken part in a charity ride.
  • The number (22%) who had carried children by bike perhaps gives us an idea of the proportion fo family-cycling readers.
  • Organised cycling holidays were also significant activities: 19.1% said they'd been on one in the last year.
  • Racing and Audax riding are perhaps a little outside the Velo Vision remit, but our readers are nothing if not eclectic in their cycling. 17% had taken part in an Audax ride, and around 16% said they'd joined a cycle race of one sort or another.
