If you haven't seen it (or don't have a telly like many velovisionaries seem not to) there's a prog on BBC2 most weekdays at 18.30, called Geronimo.
Teams make daft machines for different challenges. One recent challenge was to build a sand trench digger. Two teams of adults came along with their mercedes-powered, and twin-engined devices. then came two school teams with a push-powered planing thing, and a recumbent pedal-powered device with a paddle wheel to do the digging.
Guess who walked all over the toystoys? Both the schools teams, hands down!!!

Good!
I'm going to impersonate Roger now:
Ages ago I saw a picture of a pedal-powered digger in BCQ. A reader had spied it in France, but , unfortunately, had not seen it working.

Meant to watch this show 'cos it was co-presented by the ex-army bloke who did the hugely fun crazy inventions of world war two that wasa such fun last year

Yes, it was fun - a bit like The Great Egg Race, for those who remember that far back. Nice also that the BBC team never won!
One of the highlights for me was the first challenge, to build an amphibious vehicle, where a school group were hopelessly outclassed by commercial designs, and were competing with a converted remote control car, which never really got going. But they stayed cheerful. The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers were on hand to tow broken down vehicles out of the sea, and when the remote control car finally gave up the ghost, they towed it up the beach behind a half-track!
