Issue 1 really is sold out...

...but the good news is that it's now available in full in PDF format via our online shop.

We finally sold out of the last copies of Velo Vision Issue 1 a few days ago - despite the much-appreciated return of spare copies by several subscribers. Some of our overseas agents may have a few copies left, but they won't last long.

So as not to deprive our growing readership of the chance to complete a collection, I'm making Issue 1 available in full as a PDF file. This preserves all words and images just as they're printed on paper, while being readable by pretty much any modern computer and also being relatively compact in file size for easy transmission via the internet. The software to read PDF files will be pre-installed on most computer systems, but if you need it, it's available for free here.

Until I get a proper secure download mechanism sorted out, Issue 1 will simply be listed in the online shop like any other item, and when I receive an order for it, I will email the PDF file to the customer.

I have created PDF files of the issue in two resolutions: 72dpi and 150 dpi. The images are sharper in the 150dpi version, but the file size is correspondingly larger.

72dpi: approx 2.6 Megabytes: GBP 3

150dpi: approx 6.0 Megabytes: GBP 4

If you have a slower internet connection, I'd suggest the 72dpi version to minimise download time. ISDN or broadband users may as well go for the 150dpi version to get the better image quality.

If ordering this issue, please ensure that the email address which you supply during the ordering process is capable of accepting the attachments. Some providers such as Hotmail won't allow you to receive large files.

There's obviously a certain amount of trust involved in distributing the magazine like this, but I'm sure readers will want to support the magazine and will not pass the PDF files around to friends: ask them to order a paid-for copy instead! You're free to print out from the PDF for personal use, but to protect Velo Vision copyright, and that of the original contributors, you're not permitted to change the document or to publish it in any form without permission.

We have about 100 copies of Issue 2 left now: when these (and any other issues) are sold out I'll do the same with them.

  • Radio 4's "The Long View," last night was on drugs used in cycle racing at the end of the 19th century. You can re-listen on:

Not much to do with issue 1, sorry.

  • Also nothing to do with this story, but did anyone see Superstars last night? For some reason the final event was a mountain bike race which involved riding front suspension MTBs along a tarmac road up a hill. OK, so all the competitors had an equally bad mount and riding position for this race and therefore the competition was fair, but does anyone have any idea why they used MTBs? Was it just to make it more gruelling? Fun moment though, when the winner crossed the line, raised both hands in triumph from the bars and nearly fell off... Mind you, I'd have got off and walked after 100 yards.

  • Hey!

It's one week to Bike Right.

    Anyone else going?

Doubtless this time next week (1.00pm) I'll be near Berwick on Tweed grouching about the weather.

  • I am setting out on Tuesday to ride to Wooler (by a very roundabout route0 so I am hoping for good weather (but whether or not I get it I still intend to enjoy my ride).

And, especially for Seamus, the holiday song....
I'm on holiday and you are not, doo-dar, doo dar.
I'm on holiday you are not, oh doo-dar doo-dar day.
I'm on holiday all the time, doo-dar doo-dar day.
    Hip-hip, hooray etc.

  • Thanks for the song John. Really puts me in my place.

Just recieved an invitation to another cycling event the same weekend with rides on Saturday and Sunday and on Sat pm; "Party with buffet at York Brewery." Grr! I've paid for Bike Right months ago.

  • Beleive it or not, Jim's birthday bash was NOT knowingly scheduled to clash with Bike Right. Hey Ho. I think we'll sort out some more rides/pub bashes over the runup to Xmas though.

  • Somewhat paranoid already, my case wasn't helped when I told a colleague about the unfortunate double booking.

She suggested that perhaps the party had been planned to clash with Bike Right in the certain knowledge that many of the 'malcontents' would be miles away thus unable to 'liven-up' the proceedings.

  • From: Tom ([email protected]) on 21 October 2003
  • Well, Sally and I just grabbed a date off the calendar... Malcontents: It's perfectly easy for any malcontents to come to an AGM, drop by the office, ring up, write , speak to Jim at Roadshows. But, somehow, they don't. They tend to moan, loudly, when a very long way out of earshot. This gets very irritating for the large number of CoC people who have never had anything to do with Open Road.

  • And as most people reading this won't have the faintest idea what you're all on about, and 'cos it's off-topic anyway, that's enough.

I'll see some of you at Bike Right this coming weekend. For those who don't know, this is a regular, smallish event held at the Youth Hostel in Wooler, Northumberland - I took it off the events listings as it was fully booked months ago.

Any comments on the PDF idea?

  • From: Tom ([email protected]) on 21 October 2003
  • You've made 'em all! I think making Issue 1 available in this way is a great idea, and hope that people won't abuse it.

  • From: Seamus (etc) on 21 October 2003
  • Knuckles considered rapped.

pdf's of previous issues at a suitably discounted price excellent idea for those who need them. Be a bit of a pain if site went down part way through a download.

"Recumbent UK," gave them away free and we all know what happened to them.

  • Why not make all back issues (and maybe current issues) available electronically? This would make available for "overseas" customers without the added expense of post. Just a thought...
