Adult KMX - a first look

The first fifty full-size KMX recumbent trikes are launched at under £600 in the UK - but won't be here until August

The KMX X-Class is a grown-up version of the smaller, sized-for-children KMX which we tested back in Velo Vision 11. Like that trike, it brings mass-market appeal and mass-market prices to the recumbent market.

The only pictures so far are low-quality ones of a prototype machine:

X-Class KMX

Preliminary specification includes 24" rear, 16" front wheels, mechanical disk brakes on all three wheels and 21-speed derailleur transmission. Weight is provisionally estimated at around 21kg. Full specs are here.

Better pics are expected soon.

The £595 price for the first fifty does not include delivery, and the trikes are expected to arrive in August this year.

It's clearly not designed to compete head on with 'touring' recumbents such as Trices or Greenspeeds, but to be a bit of fun for adult jealous of their kids playing on the smaller version. It will surely also attract a good few first-time trike buyers willing to accept a few compromises to get onto three wheels - even after the first fifty, the price will surely be well below any other recumbent trike around - and below most bikes, too!

KMX now have a longish list of dealers, or they can be contacted directly on [email protected] or tel/fax 023 92 379 333.

  • Looks like its time to start clearing a space in the garage...

  • Glad to see that it has a proper 21-speed drivetrain. I thought it would be a 7 or 8 speed like the child's version.

  • It doesn't look like it's designed to compete against any of the Stein trikes either

  • I was in Barmouth last month and saw a "opening soon" sign in a shop that was full of KMX Karts TO HIRE.

  • Fab! I reckon someone with one of those petrol Go-Kart tracks should buy a fleet of KMXs and have KMX nights. Kids will stay on them all day if allowed, think of the calories they'd burn up!

  • An emergency phone call from home confirms that it arrived in my corner of East Anglia in this morning's post... Something to stay awake for...

  • Arch - a prime example being on Morecambe Prom right next to the 99p jugs of tea place, a visit to which is of course an essential element of CycleFest coming up in early August. Incidentally the CycleFest website is now updated:

  • Cyclefest and the 99p Jug of Tea shop*, just one of the reasons I've had a big smile on my face most of the week.

*For the unintiated, that's a two pint jug, sitting in the sun near the Midland Hotel, watching those silly go-carts. Halcyon days.

  • Anyone fancy bringing a load of KMXs to Morecambe and gazumping the people who run the GoKarts? Could we get enough hands to throw them and their petrol guzzlers off the track? (Please note, I'll have spent a lot of time this summer trying to control kids on KMXs, so I'll be officially 'not never going near the damn things ever again')

  • Cheap toy! Maybe I can use the next few months to convince my wife I need one for winter commuting?

  • But at least the KMX #2 (with the plastic wheels) seems to stand up to the treatment much better than the #1 (with spoked wheels) - especially if you wear the little b*****s out with Le Mans starts first - Ken the Pirate was getting the start run longer and longer to weaqr them out more and more!

  • Well, just paid my £50 deposit - they should be in the UK first week of August - good timing for the Karting element of Pete Bird's Stag Event - wonder when the tandem version will be available.
KMX say that there's a prototype available for trial at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth over this weekend.

  • and a proper bottom-bracket too! I had to get a special adaptor-thingy to be able to throw those pesky BMX cranks where they belong and install proper length cranks made of something less dense.
BTW we have never had a spoke breakage, so there! Westcountry HPVs (Rob and Carol hague) delivered our KMX at 8am on Christmas morning. Which other markets do you get service like that?

  • My KMX arrives in October, can't wait. Anybody interested in a trike/recumbent weekend if I organise one at somewhere like Castle Acre in North Norfolk?

  • From: andy wedgwood ([email protected]) on 01 October 2004
  • I am the owner of a 3w recumbent.
