Daily web reports by a participant let you follow the journey from afar...

The Eco-Trip in Northumberland started yesterday (Sunday 26th July) and will cover a circular route, returning to the start point at North Shields in a week's time. It's an ecological transport awareness trip and has brought together many interesting participants who will do plenty of media work alongside enjoying the tour.

Anyone not joining in can follow daily reports from the tour by Robert Blacquière. His Day 1 Report is now up, with plenty of pictures as they travelled from North Shields to Corbridge - an easy first day before the hills start! He hopes to update the site each night.

  • Looks like great fun. I should have signed up, as I have met some of these folk at Cyclevision. Nice to see some Orcadians taking part.

  • Sorry, the Orcadians did not go on the trip, due to an exploding gall bladder and two nasty operations, we had arranged to use Rob's Greenspeed tandem so as you can imagine we are fed up to the nines. If any one reading this is going to be cycling in Orkney this summer call in for a meal and a chat, you can cheer me up. just ask anyone on Rousay directions to Joseph "the mad cyclist's" house.

  • So what happened on day 4? Has disaster struck? Are there any survivors? Are they just tooo Pi**ed to write a report?

  • Dear cyclists,
I have written a quick report on the http://www.ligfiets.net/ dutch hpv site wherever i could. In general you should be able to read some information in one of the coming velovision magazines as there were some pictures taken by Jason (a photographer for the magazine).
In general i was very surprised that the streamlined velomobile (a quest) was very capable in climbing. I wrote something about that in the forum http://lijst.ligfiets.net/archief/ligfiets-forum/2004-August/000619.html when we got back yesterday. All went very well and we soon hope to gather all the photos of the trip.
Some people could be very tired, but there was good weather and everybody enjoyed themselves very much i think.
We were also allowed to speak to government people who were interested in improving cycle tourism. We spoke for example to Mark Porter who write books on cycle tracks and others of course. It was nice to see that the efforts in organising by Ken "the pirate" Davison paid off! I think the gratitude of the people who went on the trip is very great for his work. We were helped of course by great weather and the people of Northumbria were very friendly and welcoming.
I hope to be able to write a story on ligfiets.net to cover the trip, but words and pictures could not describe this week in the way that we have seen it.
I am very sorry for my limited english and perhaps for the mistakes in this piece of text, but i simply could not resist in giving an answer.

  • On Robert's page there was no update after day 4 because of the lack of GSM coverage in Norham. As Jack noted some reports without pictures were made on www.ligfiets.net. More photgraphs will follow.

  • Like Jack said, words and pictures don't even come close to describing what an amazing experience it was for all who took part in the event.

It was one in the eye for the northumbrians that all of the Dutch were so capable at hill climbing even Wim in his aged Alleweder. And as for those bananas...

Doubtless I'll do summat about it in the next BKN.
