RSS 2.0 feed now active on velovision.co.uk

See when new stories go up, link to our headlines and more...

Thanks to web programmer Simon this site now has an RSS 2.0 compliant feed:

RSS allows you to gather news from various sites via 'news aggregator' programs, and allows other websites to pick up on our story headlines more easily. Must admit I've never used it a lot myself, but I found some more descriptions of what it is and the benefits here, here, here and if you want plenty of detail, here.

Simon notes:

"The feed is now operative. People need to link to:

http://www.velovision.co.uk/cgi-bin/genRSS.pl

If there are any problems, people should inform me along with details of whatever software they're using to process the RSS data."

  • Wouldn't you know it - as soon as Pete makes an announcement I uncover a couple of bugs :-( These bugs have now been fixed, and I've tested the feed using RssReader 1.0.88.0 and all seems to be well. For now ...

  • If you're testing RSS feeds Simon, try http://feedvalidator.org/

Good to see another site get RSS.

  • A couple of people have emailed me saying that the RSS feed doesn't work with [insert browser here].

It's worth noting that the RSS feed is aimed at people, mainly webmasters, who want to keep an up-to-date list of VV's headlines on their website using either a news aggregator or a server-side script. The feed data itself won't make much sense on its own unless you're familiar with XML.

  • What the **** are you all talking about?
I know SRAM do a 2.0, and I've heard of RST forks but this must be a bit of bicycle i've never heard of!

  • Whatzat Simon? Isn't it simply aimed at anyone equipped with an RSS news aggregator? Like as a push mechanism for the VV site story updates so we know when we forgot to look?

For anyone who doesn't understand - you need an RSS newsfeed reader unless you've got a whizzy state of the art browser with one already built in (latest version of Opera?).

Anyway, looks just fine in NetNewsWire Lite - thanks guys - excellent way of reminding me I'm not dropping in to check the headlines as often as I should.

I'll shut up now before Seamus notices the noise.

  • OK, fair point, well made.

RSS feeds are aimed mainly at those who have news aggregators. However, given a suitable program on a webserver it's quite possible to 'embed' the contents of an RSS feed into a web page.

Not only have I done this on my own website, but I've also written a script to handle the parsing of RSS/XML into HTML :-) (Google for 'crunchRSS')

And to think I only wrote the RSS stuff because I was bored at work :-)

  • ... or to put it another way: if you don't know what it is, you probably don't need it.

  • This is great. I use bloglines as my news aggregator. The velovision feed seems to work perfectly although as yet the velovision page is not setup for auto-discovery.

The link bellow should allow you to subscribe to velovision and create a (free) bloglines account at the same time.
