Pedalcar racers unveil 2005 calendar

All the racing action for next year...

Publicity bod Jeremy Featherstone mentions: "Of note is that, for the first time in many years, we are holding a joint event with the BHPC (HPV racing folks) at Castle Combe. They will be using the full circuit and we will be using the paddock."

Here's the press release in all its glory:

2005 BRITISH PEDAL CAR CHAMPIONSHIP CALENDAR PUBLISHED

Following a successful A.G.M. on Sunday, 17th October, the BFPCR are proud to present the racing calendar for the year 2005.

All but one championship event is now confirmed both in date and venue although the format of one or two of the rounds is still to be "tweaked" a little. Obviously, whatever the format, there will be the customary minimum of five hours of racing on offer which the pedal car teams have come to expect for their 12.50! The 2005 schedule has been modified to taken account of comments received from the teams over the 2004 calendar and the races have been allocated differently to try and miss such things as school and university exams as much as possible.

As well as the overall, 8 round, British Championship three other competitions will also be up for grabs in 2005. The aim of these is to provide teams who have difficulty travelling to all the events countrywide (or teams who have trouble raising a full team to compete at the front all the way through the longer events) something else to aim for. Therefore, three of the events have been grouped into a "Northern" and three into a "Southern" series and a trophy will be awarded to the team scoring the most points in their class in each of these. Also, the first race of the four "sprint" events (events where the day's result is decided on the aggregate of several shorter races) will be grouped together to find a sprint champion. As far as the races on the day are concerned, teams will notice no difference but hopefully this will add to the competition and spice up the racing even more than it is already.

The overall emphasis of the championship remains based on an endurance ethos with over sixty hours of racing on offer throughout the year, but the variety of events is now such that there should be something for everybody, from the 1-hour sprints at Curborough up to the full 24 hours of Margam Park.

Potential new teams should also remember that it is far from compulsory to enter all the events - many teams just compete in one or two a year and this is a good way to dip a toe in the water.

Six classes will be contested in 2005:

PC1: Open - 4 drivers per team (6 in 24 hour races)
PC2: Under 16's - 4 drivers per team (6 in 24 hour races)
PC3: Under 14's - 6 drivers per team in all races
PC4: Under 12's - 6 drivers per team in all races
PC0: Solo Drivers - 1 driver per team in all races
PCF: All female teams - Number of drivers determined by age group as above

With six races on the track at the same time, there is always something to watch or to get involved in during a BPCC race no matter how fast you are, no matter what age you are, no matter how hi-tech (or otherwise) your car is. Pedal Car Racing remains a sport that all levels of competitor can take part in and gain enjoyment from. "Fast, Friendly and Fun Racing" was never more true than it is right now.

  • Oh! When I saw the headline I thought maybe it was one of those naked for charity calendars...

  • You've never been to a pedal car race, have you Sue?

  • Tom Riley was talking about some photo project of cycling personalities the other night (I'm afraid I was very, very drunk). Is there still time to get a calendar out? I've never ridden a bike naked, but there's always a first!

  • That was Blurry Cycling Personalities, Andy - Mr Patient doesn't do naked ones! But I believe M'colleague Arch and the esteemed Mr hilldodger have been having some thoughts in this direction... (Exit, persued by a bear!)

  • You just can't get the photographers, that's the problem. Could we get 12 immodest velovisionaries together for a calendar though?...

  • From: andy scaife (chortling@ thought) on 26 October 2004
  • Damn right we could! even in york we could easily get 12, in fact I can think of 12 now! Not all male either, thank god!
And if you need a photographer then we have those too....
    Lets do it!!!

  • From: Arch (@uni) on 26 October 2004
  • Oh lord.... We'd need a charity to do it for I guess. And to think up ways to conceal bits behind bikes etc. Not sure how quickly it could be organised - 2005 might be a bit of a rush... On the other hand, you just don't get many calendars with bike themes - plenty of kittens and steam trains and views of country cottages. Maybe we should....

  • Seattle WA: every year during the Fremont Summer Solstice parade, there is a ride-past by painted naked cyclists - check it out at bodyfreedom.org/painted_cyclists/
I mention it here as an option for toning down what could be an embarrassing exercise, and for making a better case for it under the general heading of 'Art'. Good luck!
