Two ways to support cycling
Vote for cycling projects in the UK's Lottery poll, and donate to Re~cycle, who are now shipping bicycles to Liberia...
Re~cycle is one of the UK's longest-running and largest bicycle recycling operations, and with the support of bike donors Royal Mail, recently expanded to serve yet another country:
Old Royal Mail bikes going to Liberia
On Saturday (23rd October), Re-Cycle, the Colchester based bike charity will be sending old Royal Mail bikes to new partners in Liberia. The bikes are being shipped as part of the Re-Cycle scheme which has linked up with charity The Salesians of Don Bosco, who work with Liberian children still suffering from the after-effects of the country's seven-year war. In exchange for one of our bikes and the training to maintain and mend it, young people are encouraged to put down their weapons and take up a bike to go to school. Public transport ground to a halt and petrol prices are high, so you either walk or get on your bike.
Since joining Re-Cycle in 2000, Royal Mail has donated more than 8,000 bikes to third world countries. This is the first time that bikes have been sent to Liberia.
For further information and details of how your donation could help support Re~cycle's work, see The Re~cycle website.
Vote for cycling projects and help secure further funding: it just costs a penny (from a UK landline):
The UK National Lottery Good Causes Awards are part of the 10th anniversary of the Lottery celebrations. I'm not quite clear if the winners get actual money or just kudos, but at just a penny to vote, why not give Sustrans and Glasgow's Community Can Cycle a boost? They're among the shortlisted projects.
All of the relevant phone numbers, plus descriptions of the projects, are on this page - or for a bike-friendly spin on it all see this BikeBiz story, which suggests the most cycle-friendly options in each category.
Voting closes on the 31st October. Velo Vision has already voted :-)

| From: Norti Rascal (@hmp.com) on 22 October 2004 | | Forumerserss on the C+ site are saying DON'T vote for Sustrans because all the routes are crapt etc etc. Maybe one or two people could visit the campaign section and have a word? |
| From: someone (here) on 26 October 2004 | | Re-cycle are looking for a mechanic to go out to Liberia at the end of November to teach some cycle mechanics, they will be paid! |
| From: andy scaife (bike_rescue etc) on 28 October 2004 | | Er... Thanks whoever you are for posting that. looks like I'm off out there next month, formalities notwithstanding. One life-lesson learned. never ask a 13 year old girl if she'd like to be taken out of school for a while to go to West Africa and do aid work! i've just about bent my glasses back into shape and scrubbed the lipstick off my face! |
| From: Bob MacQueen ([email protected]) on 28 October 2004 | Thanks Norti - I will try to do a bit of good at the C+ site. I am a Ranger and have just spent a wonderful day in the company of about 60 riders opening a new secrtion of the National Network here in Leamington Spa heading for Rugby. I know there are sections which are not so good but if like me you have sat in meeting after meeting with Local Authorities, British Warterways and various land owners you might understand why there are problems. Until the Government puts some teeth into legislation allowing compulsory purcahse etc like roads we are I am afraid going to have to make lots of compromises. Having said that there are some great routes and if like me you have young children they are wonderful places to get them started. So please vote - more money may help us improve the route provision. |
| From: someone (not there) on 29 October 2004 | No problem Andy, don't forget your flack jacket and suntan cream..
I did offer my services but have other issues here and couldn't devote enough time to it this year maybe next.

| From: andy scaife (hiding@home) on 09 November 2004 | | Flak jacket indeed! looks like things have kicked-off again over there, so the project is on hold for the duration. Talk is of UN convoys and curfews....... think I'll wait a bit! |
