Bikes on radio and archive film
BBC Radio 4 launches 'Pedalling to Freedom' series, and a Velocar video clip from the British Pathe archives...
Pedalling to Freedom
This morning (9:30AM) saw (heard?) the first episode of 'Pedalling for freedom', a five-part series on BBC Radio 4. The first episode covered the bicycle's impact on late 19th century women. Some brief programme notes are here and (for the next week I think) you can listen to the program again via streaming audio at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/rams/tue0930.ram
Amazingly, this is a bicycle series on the UK mainstream media NOT presented by Adam Hart-Davis. Frontman for this one is Lawrence Pollard.
Velocar footage - from 72 years ago
Frederik Van De Walle wrote recently on the Velomobile mailing list:
*** Olaf Johansson of the Swedish HPV association discovered a little treasure on the internet: go to https://www.britishpathe.com and in the search window, search for "ARMCHAIR CYCLING".
After clicking some links and doing a bit of administration, one can download the .wmv for free (size just under one meg). If you are the least interested in HPV history, you will enjoy seeing this (very short) video clip. ***
Higher-resolution versions are also available if you feel like spending money... it's filmed in Paris, and shows the two-wheeled recumbent Velocar being ridden about.

Do a search for "Armchair Cycling" to get that clip and a bunch of other good ones ;-) |

Files do not appear to light up on Macs. Anyone know a way? |

I've made several attempts to view this one with my Mac (each time that the ligfiets mailing list posts another link in response to the guys there who can't view it on their Macs), but none of us seems to have had any luck yet. |

Well, it is a WMV file, which is the Windows Media Player format - though it can probably be converted into a more Mac-friendly format. |

Its a lovely clip. The rider has bags more style than we ever manage. Thanks to Olaf for the tip.
For mac users, when you download the clip from British Pathe, they also send you an email with a link to a Window Media Player download page with versions for OS9 and X. |

Re:Pedalling to Freedom Apologies for being pedantic, but the programme is a repeat; it was first aired in April 2004 |
