Many event updates

New 2005 venues for CycleVision and the London show, HPV Worlds in Denmark next year, dates fixed for York Cycle Show, BCQ Week, Ontario ice races...

CycleVision 2005

As you'll have read in VV 16, the new venue for CycleVision is The Zandvoort Circuit, with many facilities. Dates are 11-12th June 2005. Event website is www.ligfiets.net/cyclevision/ but no 2005 stuff is up yet. Apparently the event organisers are looking at block-booking an entire campsite nearby, so that visitors don't have to reserve places individually.

Cycle 2005 moves to Docklands

The event formerly known as the Islington Cycle show moves to the ExCel venue in London's Docklands next year, presumably to create some more space - the previous venue was booked out the last few years. Dates are 12-16th October, a few weeks later than last year, and website is www.cycleshow.co.uk/ but no 2005 stuff is up yet.

World HPV Champs 2005 in Denmark

According to a report on ligfiets.net next year's HPV World Championships will be held on the 20-21st August in Aalborg in North Jutland. Organisers are the local Aalborg recumbent club, aided by Danish and possibly Swedish national HPV Clubs. Boat events are apparemntly to be held somewhere in Austria instead. More details soon, no doubt.

York Cycle Show 2005

This year's show is a week later than usual, thanks to the Royal Ascot horse-racing meeting moving to York while their usual venue is rebuilt. It's 25-26th June 2005: see www.yorkcycleshow.co.uk for more, but no 2005 stuff is up yet.

Bike Culture Week

Bike Culture Week, a residential holiday run by Company of Cyclists, takes place this year 13-20th August at Oakham in Rutland. See www.companyofcyclists.com/bikeculture.htm for details.

Ice races in Brantford, Ontario

Joe Mitrovic writes:

The Human Powered Transportation Assoc. will be hosting the 3rd annual Ice Bike races in Brantford again in Feb 2005.

Event details can be found at http://www.hptabrant.ca/icerace.htm

This year we have a sheltered outdoor rink from 12 noon - 4 and the indoor ice from 5 - 8 PM. Better and longer than last year. I would be interested in potential number of participants so we can tailor the event for maximum participation.

  • I've just been passed the following in case anyone's interested:
    ------------------
Do you have contacts who might be interested in cycling to Edinburgh for the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY event?

As part of the www.MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY.org campaign on Trade, Debt and Aid, various groups of cyclists are already planning to make their way to the G8 event in Edinburgh on Saturday 2 July 2005.

Rides like this are an excellent way of drawing attention to issues of global injustice ... with T-shirts and banners to catch the eye, and leaflets to explain what it's all about. And there are always plenty of local media opportunities - before setting off and then on the ride itself.

In order that as many as possible can take part, I've been working with TIDAL .leedstidal.org>, JDC .jubileedebtcampaign.org.uk> and well-travelled G8 cyclists to promote the concept of the "Jubilee G8 Bike Rides". It's a great way to campaign and we're wanting to encourage new groups to form in different parts of the UK - in a similar way to the successful 2004 Fairtrade bike rides.

The main channel of communication will be via the Jubilee G8 Bike Rides website..

    http://www.leedstidal.org/g8rides

There's a noticeboard on this site where potential cyclists can register interest and ride organisers and others can post plans, queries, comments etc. Please feel free to use it!

I'd be really grateful if you could forward this message as widely as possible. We have tremendous opportunities to make poverty history in 2005.

    Many thanks

Bill Phelps (Jubilee Rickshaw Freedom Riders and TIDAL steering group)

  • Incidentally this is the same bunch who were featured in (and on the cover of) Velo Vision 4 - the memorable 'Rickshaw across the Alps' ride...

  • The York Cycle Show a week later than usual?
Doesn't look like it - for as long as I can remember it has been held on the last w/e of June, which happens to be the 25th/26th next year.

  • Do we presume there will be a gathering of the lunatic fringe again at the York Rally? Saturday night ride (or walk as it was for most this year)?
